Marketing stunt gone wicked wrong

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Today was not a good day to be in charge of marketing for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim “Aqua Teen Hunger Force“.
Turner broadcasting, which owns the Cartoon Network, admitted responsibility in today’s quagmire that brought Boston to a standstill. Guerrilla marketers had hit the streets and placed several magnetic lit versions of the character Err [...]

The ‘wow’ starts when?

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Microsoft’s Vista went on sale today and no one seems to care.
Seth Godin had a great comment on this photo:

I absolutely adore this photo from the Times. Not one smile in the bunch, never mind ebullience, mania or even pleasant anticipation.
Just because a marketer says something is amazing, exciting or just plain wow doesn’t [...]

Not-so-revolutionary PR

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

We’ve been keeping an eye on Steve Case’s new playground, RevolutionHealth.com.
We’re not as interested in what they’re all about, but rather how they’re going about starting up and letting the world know about their existence.
Today RevolutionHealth launched what it’s calling a “preview” of its site. To kick things off, they secured an exclusive with [...]

Flux capacitors gone bad; DIRECTV’s latest ad

Friday, January 19th, 2007

We have a problem with the latest DIRECTV ad that features Christopher Lloyd in updated Back to the Future scenes.
The main point of the ad, which was produced by Deutsch Inc., is that DIRECTV supposedly has a greater long-term capacity for HD channels versus standard cable.
The question is: Do new HDTV set owners really care? [...]

iPhone Unboxing

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Readers seemed to enjoy the Zune unboxing, so here’s the first iPhone one to surface.

Gotcha! Those kids at Engadget are so sneaky.
Can’t wait to get one? Print this out and stare at the countdown. Trust us, those are for real.

New Year’s Resolutions from the Pulp

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

It’s only been a little over a day and we’ve seen more Kristie Alley than a Look Who’s Talking marathon screening.
If you’re like us, you’re probably sick of fitness and weight loss ads already. Our New Year’s Resolution isn’t weight loss, however. We drink enough fresh squeezed OJ around the Pulp offices to [...]

New online metrics from Quantcast

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Steve Rubel pointed out today a site called Quantcast. Similar to Alexa, it goes further for editorial outlets to provide some juicy demographic and common site information for interactive marketers and PR pros.

Some highlights for the media crowd include its Siteographicslist on the right. It works to assign relative affinity of media interests [...]

The afternoon squeeze: Dog judo

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

If you like The Office, you’ll probably like Dog Judo.
Nice little viral deal for a draggin’ afternoon at the office.

FTC smacks its lips at word-of-mouth marketing

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

The FTC weighed-in on deceptive ways of word-of-mouth marketing, saying that companies must disclose when are compensated to promote products to peers.
One of the landmark instances of such behavior came from 2002 when Sony Ericsson paid people to promote one of the first camera phones.
From today’s Washington Post:
The initiative, called “Fake Tourist,” involved placing 60 [...]

Simple pleasures of seamless interactivity

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

A couple of us from PRpulp won tickets to an upcoming Boston Bruins game at a charity auction. Full disclosure: one of us did and invited another along.
Knowing that they were pretty good seats, we headed over to the Bruins’ site to confirm our thinking. We expected to see one of those hard-to-read [...]
